Preparing Youth for Validation and Self-Efficacy: Learning to Reflect in Surinamese Primary Education

Abstract

This essay explores the “Raise Your Voice in the Classroom” project, an initiative by the Surinamese Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture aimed at integrating reflective learning into primary education. Designed for pupils aged 10–12, the program, modeled after the validation of prior learning (VPL) process, fosters self-directed learning by encouraging students to articulate their experiences, assess their skills, and engage in dialogue with peers and educators. The project demonstrated positive impacts at micro, meso, and macro levels, enhancing student motivation, teacher engagement, and curriculum development. The findings suggest that early reflection experiences equip students with critical skills for VPL, preparing them to navigate lifelong educational and career pathways with greater autonomy and confidence.
