All submissions to PLA Inside Out have not been previously published, nor are they being considered by another journal.  The main language of this journal and all submissions is English. Articles written in other languages may be submitted as long as an English translation accompanies the submission.  Authors are responsible for providing English translations.  

Texts should be single-spaced using 12-point font.  All illustrations, figures, and tables should be placed within the text at the appropriate points.  Submissions should contain an abstract of no more than 150 words, as well as a list of six key words.  Authors are expected to remove all personal/identifiable information from the manuscript; in replacement, the word “author” and the year should be used throughout the manuscript.

Typically, articles should be no more than 7,500 words and should follow stylistic and bibliographic guidelines of the latest edition (the seventh edition) of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA). 

Authors should submit their contributions electronically through this site as Microsoft Word or Rich Text Format documents.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

Invited Essays

Each issue of PLAIO will include an invited themed essay from a noted scholar/practitioner in the field.

Practice Today

This section of PLAIO is dedicated to ongoing discussions of current practices in the field. Our hope is that through reading each other’s observations about different ways of working with students, we will both become more familiar with the wide range of current practices in PLA, and also collectively engaged in addressing some of the difficult ongoing debates in the field.

We welcome articles and case studies that explore the opportunities and limitations of individual systems of PLA. (What is working? What challenges remain? What populations of students are served particularly well or poorly by different methods of PLA instruction and assessment?) We also welcome discussions of innovative practices and assessments of student experiences.
