In 2009, Denise M. Hart and Jerry H. Hickerson authored a book, Prior Learning Portfolios: A Representative Collection (Chicago, IL: The Council for Adult and Experiential Learning [CAEL]/KendallHunt Professional). The book is made up of case studies of 11 assessment models of U.S. institutions. It also includes an opening chapter by Diana Bamford-Rees, CAEL’s associate vice-president, titled “Thirty-five years of PLA: We’ve Come a Long Way,” which offers an overview of key events in the history of PLA in the U.S., 1973-2008. Included here is the timeline taken from that chapter (pp. 9-10). Thanks to Diana for her willingness to let us use this material.
